Kart Club Revs Up As Facility Gets On Track
CAIRNS Kart Club’s long wait for a new motorsport and driver training facility is slowly coming to an end after the club presented a project masterplan to the Cairns Regional Council earlier this month.
The masterplan which included preliminary facility and track layouts, designs, costs and business plans, was “well accepted” by the council which had already bought 20ha of farm land on Thomson Rd in Edmonton for about $750,000 five years ago.
The plan also proposed that the facility will be a multi-use space and incorporate events for disabled motorsports, inline skating, supermotards, electric and human-powered vehicles, motorhome facilities and a criterium track for the Cairns Cycling Club.
Although the karting club’s masterplan itself is no guarantee the $6 million facility will be built, it provided council the assurance it needed to “soon” sign Cairns Kart Club as a leaseholder of the parcel of land at Thomson Rd.
A lease agreement and the facility masterplan are tipped to help the club campaign for government funding before development applications can be made and construction can begin.
